The Union-Wide Combined Congress: Spirit of Prophecy (SOP) & Literature Evangelists, held from April 16 to 19, 2025, at Penview Hotel in Sarawak, brought together dedicated Literature Evangelist workers, leaders, and members from across the union to celebrate and strengthen the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church through literature ministry and the prophetic writings of Ellen G. White.

Guided by the theme, “Lest We Forget; Sharing the Vision, Sharing God’s Love Through the Literature Ministry,” the congress served as a spiritual and practical platform to reignite commitment to the Church’s publishing work and reaffirm the lasting relevance of the Spirit of Prophecy. The theme echoed throughout the event, reminding attendees of the sacred trust entrusted to them—to keep the vision alive and spread God’s love through the printed word.

The four-day congress featured a well-structured program that included seven sessions focused on the Spirit of Prophecy and four sessions dedicated to Literature Evangelism. These sessions were thoughtfully led by union and local conference leaders, publishing directors, and Spirit of Prophecy coordinators, each offering biblical insights, historical context, and practical applications for ministry.

A total of 103 participants took part in the congress, including 77 official delegates and 11 speakers and presenters. The Malaysia Adventist Union Mission (MAUM) sent 11 delegates, the Peninsular Malaysia Mission was represented by 14 delegates, the Sabah Mission brought 23 delegates, the Sarawak Mission had the highest number with 50 participants, and the Northern Sabah Mission contributed 16 delegates. In addition, eleven speakers and presenters contributed to the sessions and provided valuable leadership throughout the event.

This program features several powerful and distinguished speakers, including Pr. Stephen Apola, Associate Publishing Director of the General Conference; Pr. Rey Cabanero, Publishing Director of the Southern Asia-Pacific Division (SSD); Dr. Donny Chrissutianto, Director of the Ellen G. White Estate Branch Office; Pr. Gomer Vistal, Vice President of Marketing at the Philippine Publishing House (PPH); Pr. Varah Mhaingam, Director of the Ellen G. White Research Center at Asia-Pacific International University (AIU); Pr. Francis Lajanim, Retired Publishing Director of the Southern Asia Union Mission (SAUM); and Pr. Edgar Bryan Tolentino, Spirit of Prophecy Director of the Southern Asia-Pacific Division (SSD).

In a time when many view God as a source of blessings rather than a personal friend, Pastor Stephen Apola reminds us that “God is not an ATM machine. He wants to be close to us, to have a connection with us.” This profound statement speaks to the heart of Christian faith—a relationship with Jesus, not mere religion. Pastor Francis Lajanim adds depth by highlighting the redemptive purpose behind Christ’s sacrifice: “Sin separates us from God, but God always has a good plan for us. The blood that was shed on the cross is holy blood—poured out for our salvation.” It’s all about restoring connection and saving souls for the Kingdom of Heaven. Pastor Mahaingam Varah further emphasizes this connection through the Sabbath, calling it “the seal of God, because it tells us who God is.” It is a symbol of identity, relationship, and divine purpose. Pastor Gomer Vistal emphasized the importance of reestablishing a strong and personal connection with God as the foundation of spiritual growth and community revival. According to him, before any meaningful progress can occur, individuals must first renew their relationship with the Lord. This sentiment echoes the collective call for introspection and spiritual realignment within the faith community.

Supporting this message, Pastor Rey Cabenaro shared that it is ultimately the Lord who stirs our hearts and grants us wisdom and understanding. Pastor Abel Bana, president of the MAUM, added that God’s Word will continue to advance and that His guidance will always be present in the journey of ministry.

Pastor Edgar Bryan Tolentino affirms the lasting impact of Ellen G. White, describing her as “a Christ-centered writer whose writings enhance our spiritual experience and are vital in health, education, and mission.” Dr. Donny Chrissutianto reinforces the divine origin of inspired writings, stating that “Every inspired writing is the result of the Holy Spirit and a union with God’s will.” Together, these reflections offer a clear and compelling vision: God desires closeness with His people, speaks through His Word and messengers, and calls us to live in alignment with His will—resting in His love, working in His mission, and preparing for His Kingdom.

One of the most moving highlight was the special segment titled “Miracle of Grace.” This powerful testimony session featured 12 Literature Evangelists from the Sarawak Mission, North Sabah Mission, Sabah Mission, and Peninsular Malaysia Mission, each sharing personal experiences that illustrated how God’s grace continues to work mightily through the ministry of literature.
