The event drew the participation of 86 villagers, who seized the opportunity to evaluate their present health status and acquire insights into their prospective well-being.

On Sunday, February 2nd, 2025, the Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Kaman in Krokong Bau was abuzz with activity as it served as the venue for a health screening event designed to enhance health awareness and facilitate the early detection of chronic diseases. The event, coordinated by the Adventist Community Services and Health Ministries Department of the Seventh-day Adventist Mission of Sarawak, in partnership with Klinik Pergigian Hospital Bau, took place from 9.00am to 2.oopm. The principal objective was to deliver vital health services and consultations to the local community, thereby cultivating a sense of accountability for individual health.

A committed team of 25 volunteers, comprising medical professionals, nurses, clergy, and ordinary individuals, united to provide assistance to the residents of Krokong. The complimentary health services provided during the event encompassed comprehensive health assessments, measurements of blood pressure and body mass index (BMI), blood glucose testing, fundamental medical consultations, and dental care services. The event also provided participants with health education on lifestyle diseases, preventive care, and the importance of regular health check-ups. Furthermore, health-related literature was exhibited and made available for purchase, providing additional resources for individuals keen to enhance their understanding of health maintenance.

The event drew the participation of 86 villagers, who seized the opportunity to evaluate their present health status and acquire insights into their prospective well-being. Numerous individuals received preliminary notifications regarding prospective health issues, including hypertension and diabetes, thereby enabling them to pursue prompt follow-up care at local healthcare facilities. This early intervention is instrumental in averting significant health complications and enhancing the overall well-being of the community. Some of the villagers, for example, were informed about elevated blood pressure levels and advised to seek further medical attention, potentially preventing the progression of cardiovascular diseases.

In conjunction with the health examinations, participants received education on the adoption of healthy lifestyle practices, underscoring the significance of a plant-based diet, consistent physical activity, and mental well-being. The event also underscored a comprehensive approach to health, advocating for equilibrium among physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Banners promoting NEWSTART, an acronym representing the Eight Laws of Health—Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunshine, Temperance, Air, Rest, and Trust in Divine Power—were prominently exhibited throughout the venue, offering insightful guidance for attaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Attendees were also given handouts detailing simple exercises and dietary changes they could adopt, alongside tips for stress management and cultivating a positive mindset.

Notwithstanding the favorable reception of the event, the community exhibited a range of varied reactions. Although numerous individuals articulated a desire to embrace healthier lifestyles, several expressed apprehensions regarding the difficulties associated with altering their behaviors, especially in relation to transitioning to a plant-based diet. In some cases, cultural preferences and access to plant-based food options were cited as barriers to adopting the suggested dietary changes. However, the event organizers and volunteers were encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by many in considering lifestyle modifications, including the gradual integration of healthier eating habits into their daily routines.

In spite of these challenges, the organizers and volunteers are still hopeful that future projects like this will continue to involve the community and inspire people to make positive changes. The event underscored the significance of community involvement in preventive healthcare and seeks to establish an enduring impact by disseminating the principles of holistic health, extending its reach beyond Adventists to encompass the wider community in rural Sarawak. Moving forward, the organizers plan to incorporate more interactive workshops, cooking demonstrations, and fitness activities into future events, aiming to make healthy living more accessible and engaging for individuals of all ages. These continued efforts will contribute to creating a sustainable culture of health and wellness within the rural areas of Sarawak.

The health screening event in Krokong Bau was a significant step towards promoting health awareness and preventive care within the local community. By offering free health services, education on lifestyle diseases, and valuable resources, the event empowered individuals to take control of their health and make informed decisions for their well-being. While there were challenges in fully transitioning some participants to healthier lifestyles, the positive reception and the willingness of many to consider change highlights the event’s success in sparking important conversations about health. Moving forward, continued community engagement through similar initiatives will be crucial in spreading the message of holistic health and making it accessible to everyone, ultimately improving the health outcomes of rural Sarawak’s residents.
